Wave of car bombings in Iraq kills at least 51

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A wave of over a dozen car bombings hit central and southern Iraq during morning rush hour on Monday, officials said, killing at least 51 people in the latest coordinated attack by insurgents determined to undermine the government.

The blasts, which wounded scores more, are part of a months-long surge of attacks that is reviving fears of a return to the widespread sectarian bloodshed that pushed the country to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. Suicide attacks, car bombings and other violence have killed more than 3,000 people since April, including more than 500 since the start of July, according to an Associated Press count.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Monday's attacks, but they bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida's Iraqi arm. The group, known as the Islamic State of Iraq, frequently sets off such coordinated blasts in an effort to break Iraqis' confidence in the Shiite-led government.

Police officers said a total of 12 parked car bombs hit markets and parking lots in predominantly Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad within one hour. They say the deadliest were in the eastern Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City, where two separate explosions killed nine civilians and wounded 33 others.

Ambulances rushed to the scene where rescuers and police were removing the charred and twisted remains of the car bombs from the bloodstained pavement. The force of the two explosions lightly damaged nearby houses and shops.

Taxi driver Ali Khalil was passing nearby when the first bomb exploded.

"I heard a thunderous explosion that shook my car and broke the rear window," the 36-year old Khalil said. "I immediately pulled over and didn't know what to do while seeing people running or lying on the ground," he added.

He brought two of the wounded to a nearby hospital before heading back to his home to stay indoors the rest the day. Like many Iraqis, he blamed political infighting and incapable security forces for the deteriorated security situation.

Several hours after the explosions, acting U.N. envoy to Iraq Gyorgy Busztin expressed concern over "the heightened level of violence which carries the danger that the country falls back into sectarian strife."

"Iraq is bleeding from random violence, which sadly reached record heights during the Holy month of Ramadan," added Busztin, referring to the dawn-to-dusk fasting Islamic holy month. He called for immediate and decisive action to stop the "senseless bloodshed."

Ten other bombs around Baghdad, mostly Shiite-dominated suburbs as well as the town of Mahmoudiya 30 kilometers (20 miles) to the south, killed 31 people.

The wave of bombings also extended to Iraq's majority-Shiite south.

Back-to-back explosions by two parked car bombs in an outdoor market and near a gathering of construction workers killed seven civilians and wounded 35 others in the city of Kut, 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad.

And in the oil-rich city of Basra in southern Iraq, four other people were killed and five wounded when a parked car bomb ripped through a market. Basra is 550 kilometers (340 miles) southeast of Baghdad.

Health officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

The violence surged after an April crackdown by security forces on a Sunni protest camp in the northern town of Hawija that killed 44 civilians and a member of the security forces, according to United Nations estimates. The bloodshed is linked to rising sectarian divisions between Iraq's Sunni and Shiite as well as friction between Arabs and Kurds, dampening hopes for a return to normalcy nearly two years after U.S. forces withdrew from the country.

Ammonia leak stopped at Union Gap warehouse

UNION GAP, Wash. ? A mechanical failure in a compression room caused an ammonia leak this morning at the Eakin fruit warehouse on Main Street, but the situation is now under control, according to Union Gap fire officials.

One employee who arrived at the building just before 6 a.m. smelled the ammonia and was taken to a local hospital for observation, but Union Gap fire officials say she was not injured. No other employees were in the building.

Main Street between the U.S. Highway 97 entrance ramp and Washington Street was shut down after fire crews arrived but re-opened at 8:10, fire officials said.

Union Gap fire was assisted by the hazardous materials specialists from the Yakima Fire Department.

Eakin Fruit is located at 4310 Main St.

Ammonia is used in industrial refrigeration to cool fruit warehouses.

North American Beaver/Chuck Szmurlo

What happens on July 31, you ask? Well, this upcoming July 31 both Canada and the U.S. will be releasing GDP estimates, and ? you guessed it ? ours are supposed to be better.

I should specify that by ?better? I mean that Canada?s numbers are likely to surprise on the upside, whereas the U.S. will likely disappoint. I should add another asterisk: Ours are monthly GDP figures, whereas the U.S. will be reporting on the three-month period from April to June that makes up the second quarter. Apples and oranges, you say? Well, our apples are still better than their oranges. As the recovery down south gains momentum, our bragging days are numbered. So enjoy this last remnant of our glorious spell as a global economic champion and don?t worry about the fine print.

Here?s an overview of what economists expect:

Canada ? May GDP:

Who thought May would turn out so well? Analysts are revising up their forecasts and the Bank of Canada might soon have to follow suit. The expectation is for a gain of 0.3-0.5 per cent of GDP, which would mean the economy is on track to beat the BOC?s tame projection of one per cent growth in the second quarter. This would be highly unusual since, as my colleague Tamsin McMahon recently pointed out, the bank is usually overly optimistic.

Before you get carried away with euphoria, though, I should note that the surprise performance seems to be largely a confluence of one-off lucky circumstances. Fertilizer sales got an unexpected boost from pent-up global demand due to a late planting season caused by an unusually wet and cold Spring. Retail sales, likewise, soared as Canadians celebrated the end of this long, crappy Spring spell with a bit of extra spending. The weather must also have something to do with a recent rebound in the number of houses being built after a grim winter. And finally ? the most random seasonal twist of all ? there was the impact of the NHL lockout, which ensured hockey season was still ongoing in May.

Savour the propitious confluence of freak events while it lasts, for June is poised to look like the exact opposite of May, due to the impact of the Alberta floods and Quebec?s construction strike.

U.S. ? second quarter GDP (advance estimate):

Nobody predicted great things for the second quarter after Washington raised income taxes on the rich, as well as payroll taxes on everybody, and slashed federal spending through the sequester. Still, the economy might have missed even those tempered expectations. Americans pushed the stop button (or, at least, the pause button) on their recent shopping binge: Consumer spending is projected at 1.4% for the quarter, more than one percentage point lower than in the January-to-March period, according to CIBC. Exports continue to linger, as Europe and emerging economies struggle. Even the housing market seemed to sputter a bit toward the end of the quarter, with both the pace of residential real estate construction and sales of existing homes slipping in June.

Wednesday?s figures will reflect an 80-year statistical revision by the U.S. Commerce Department that should boost GDP levels by three per cent. The bump-up, though, shouldn?t affect growth rates.

2-headed turtle at Texas zoo gets Facebook page

A two-headed turtle born last month at the San Antonio Zoo has become so popular that she has her own Facebook page.

Zoo officials say the Texas cooter, named Thelma and Louise for the female duo in the 1991 Oscar-winning movie, has been doing well.

Spokeswoman Debbie Rios-Vanskike (van SKYKE') says the turtle eats and swims, and added that the two heads ? named Louise Left and Thelma Right ? get along.

The Facebook page on Sunday showed photos of the quirky reptile and imaginary conversations between the two heads.

The turtle hatched June 18. The animal is on display at the zoo's Friedrich Aquarium.

Seven killed, including gunman, in Florida shootout; 2 hostages rescued

SWAT officers shot and killed a man they say gunned down 6 people in Hialeah, Fla., ending an hours-long standoff. NBC's ?Bobby Brooks reports.

By Marian Smith and Matthew DeLuca, NBC News

SWAT officers shot and killed a gunman early Saturday after he killed 6 people, ending an hours-long standoff near Miami, Fla., police said.

Two people were rescued alive and unharmed from an apartment building where they were being held hostage, Hialeah police spokesman Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez told NBC News.

The SWAT team found the gunman barricaded on the fourth floor of the building, where they killed him and saved the two hostages.

NBC Miami

The building manager and her husband were found dead in a hallway and three others, two females and one male, were found in one of the apartments, Rodriguez said. Another man was found dead in the lobby of a building across the street.

"This is one of the worst shootings we've probably had ever in Hialeah," police spokesman Carl Zogby?told NBC Miami.

Police first responded to a 911 call at 6:30 p.m. ET Friday. They evacuated the apartment complex and shut down several surrounding streets.

Negotiators were talking to the gunman before the shootout and police sent a robot onto the scene.

?The end result: seven people have lost their lives in this incident, six innocent victims and the one shooter,? Zogby told the station. ?Now starts the investigation, how and why this happened.?

NBC Miami

A young woman told NBC Miami that two of the victims of the shooting were her parents.

?I guess there was an altercation and the person opened fire on both of them. My mom was dead the moment that she was shot and my dad still had a pulse when I got to him,? the woman said.

One of the victims appeared to have been shot at across the street from the main scene, police said, when the gunman opened fire from a balcony.

?From up there, he was able to shoot at people across the street, catching this one man who was just walking into his apartment,? Rodriguez told the Miami Herald.

Police were investigating the motive and were still identifying those who were killed.

This is a breaking news story. Please check back for more updates.

Loyola of Chicago coach Porter Moser gets contract extension

Porter Moser enters his third season at Loyola of Chicago men's basketball coach with a large boost of confidence thanks to a contract extension through the 2017-18 season.

The deal announced Friday comes after a 15-16 season and finds the Ramblers returning 10 players. Loyola was eight wins better last season under Moser and figures to be stronger this season around a young core.

In laudatory comments about its coach and program, the school cited improvements under Moser in two seasons.

"Both on and off the court, coach Moser is a leader in every sense of the word and extending his contract affirms our faith in his ability to help the Rambler men's basketball program reach new heights," Loyola athletic director Grace Calhoun said in a release.

This will be Loyola's first season in the Missouri Valley Conference. Junior forward Christian Thomas is among top returning players.

Pope stresses the importance of family in Brazil speech

Luca Zennaro / AP

The pontiff is making his first visit overseas since he was elected in March. An estimated 2 million people are expected to greet him.

By Mary Murray and Henry Austin, NBC News

Pope Francis stressed the importance of family and grandparents in particular?in a speech in Brazil Friday.

?How precious is the family as the privileged place for transmitting the faith,? he said, according to an English-language version of his Angelus address released by Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi before the pontiff spoke.

Walking confidently through a dangerous Brazilian neighborhood, Pope Francis looked right at home among the poorest of the poor in Rio on Thursday as he calls for Brazil to do more for social justice. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

?How important grandparents are for family life, for passing on the human and religious heritage which is so essential for each and every society. How important it is to have inter-generational exchanges and dialogue, especially within the context of the family,? he added.

Francis, who was speaking to a crowd at the archbishop?s residence in Rio de Janeiro,?said the dialogue between generations was ?a treasure to be preserved and strengthened.?

Francis ?- the fifth day of his week-long tour ?-?was also meeting with juvenile detainees and other young members of the Catholic Church, as part of events associated with World Youth Day.

More than a million youngsters were estimated to have greeted Pope Francis at the event's opening ceremony?on Rio de Janeiro?s Copacabana beach late Thursday. ?

Throngs of well-wishers braved the rain to catch a glimpse of the pontiff after he arrived by helicopter. History?s first Latin American pope then drove down the beach, stopping regularly to greet the crowd.

The annual event, attended by worshipers from across the globe, began in 1985 and provides the pope with an opportunity to meet the church?s young people. ?

Earlier on Thursday, Pope Francis underlined his mission to lead a ?church for the poor? on a visit to the Varginha favela,?one of the most notorious of Rio?s impoverished crime-ridden shanty towns.

?You are not alone,? he assured the crowd, prompting a roar of approval. ?The church is with you, the pope is with you.?

Preaching against ?selfishness and individualism? in an uplifting address, he railed against inequality and corruption and called for a ?culture of solidarity.?

Hedge funds: From rock stars to fallen stars?

NEW YORK (AP) -- Hedge funds were once the rock stars of the financial industry. The smartest people worked for them. The wealthiest gave them their money. They were an easy path to fortune.

But if that get-rich-quick narrative was an exaggeration before the financial crisis, it's even less true since. The hedge fund industry's performance has been spotty in recent years; its public image, bruised. SAC Capital Advisors became the latest high-flyer brought low when the Justice Department on Thursday accused it of allowing insider trading and making hundreds of millions of dollars illegally.

To critics, hedge funds are secretive, risky, loosely regulated playgrounds for the super wealthy. And while the industry keeps expanding, its performance does not. This year could be the fifth in a row that hedge funds underperform the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index, according to Hedge Fund Research, or HFR, which analyzes the industry. That's an unwelcome reversal: For the 19 years from 1990 to 2008, hedge fund returns beat or tied the S&P 500 15 times.

Signs point ? finally ? to end of Europe recession

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- After a year and a half of recession, Europe's battered economy could finally be showing signs of life.

It's not the kind of recovery that calls for a big celebration. Any upswing will be a slow and arduous climb ? up a slope strewn with high unemployment and scarce credit for businesses.

But signs of improvement are there. On Thursday, a German index of business confidence rose for the third month in a row. Meanwhile, surveys of purchasing managers in the euro area indicate manufacturing activity edged back into growth territory in July for the first time in 18 months.

Toyota top-selling automaker despite China slump

TOKYO (AP) -- Toyota shrugged off China sales woes to stay the world's top selling automaker for the first half of this year, outpacing U.S. rival General Motors Co., which boasted such bragging rights for seven decades until 2008.

Toyota Motor Corp. sold 4.91 million cars and trucks around the world for the January-June period, down 1.2 percent from the previous year, according to numbers it released Friday.

GM said earlier this month it sold 4.85 million vehicles worldwide in the six months, growing almost 4 percent as it gained U.S. sales faster than Toyota. For the second quarter alone, GM had a slight edge, outselling Toyota by about 10,000 vehicles.

FDA proposes rules for safer imported foods

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Chances are that about 15 percent of the food you eat ? more if your diet includes lots of fruits, vegetables and cheese ? comes from abroad, and the government is taking steps now to make it safer.

New rules proposed Friday by the Food and Drug Administration would make U.S. food importers responsible for ensuring that their foreign suppliers are handling and processing food safely.

Imported fruit and cheese has been responsible for many recent outbreaks, including 153 recent Hepatitis A illnesses linked to a frozen berry mix sold at Costco last month as well as four deaths last year that were linked to listeria in Italian cheese. Imported fruits or vegetables are also the top suspect in an ongoing outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal infection that has so far sickened 321 people in 13 states.

AP source: No Fed chair pick until the fall

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House says President Barack Obama is not expected to name a new chairman of the Federal Reserve until the fall, lowering expectations for an imminent announcement.

A senior official says the president has not made a decision on who will replace current Fed chairman Ben Bernanke. His term expires early next year.

The president's pick is highly anticipated, given the Fed chairman's impact on economic policy.

US consumer sentiment reaches 6-year high in July

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans are more confident about the economy than at any time since July 2007, a survey found, suggesting consumers will spend more and accelerate growth in the months ahead.

The University of Michigan said Friday that its final reading of consumer sentiment in July was 85.1. That's up one point from June but nearly 13 points higher than a year ago.

Rising home prices and steady job gains are boosting household wealth and income. The proportion of Americans who expect their inflation-adjusted incomes to rise in coming year is greater than at any time since late 2007, the survey found. And the percentage of Americans who say their home values have risen is also at a six-year high.

United finds 787 transmitter with pinched wire

United Airlines says it found a transmitter with a pinched wire on one of its Boeing 787s ? the same problem that investigators think may have sparked a fire on a parked 787 in London.

Christen David, a spokeswoman for United Continental Holdings Inc., says the airline inspected all six of its 787s, and found one emergency transmitter with a pinched wire. That transmitter was removed and sent back to Honeywell International Inc. for further inspection. It has been replaced and David says all six planes are flying with transmitters.

Earlier this month, an Ethiopian Airlines 787 parked at London's Heathrow Airport caught fire. Investigators said it may have been caused by an emergency transmitter. That prompted U.S. authorities to order inspections for pinched or damaged wires.

Apple's smartphone market share slips

Apple's share of the global smartphone market fell during the second quarter to its lowest level in four years, according to data released Friday.

Apple took 13.1 percent of the worldwide market, according to ABI Research, down from 16.6 percent a year ago. That's the lowest level since the third quarter of 2009, two years after the launch of the first iPhone.

Apple Inc., based in Cupertino, Calif., sold 31.2 million iPhones in the April-to-June period, up from 26 million in the same period a year ago, the report said. But the company's sales growth isn't keeping pace with the overall smartphone market, which grew 52 percent from last year.

T-Mobile nixes down payments, ups monthly fees

NEW YORK (AP) -- T-Mobile said Friday that it is temporarily eliminating upfront payments on new phones, but it is increasing the prices for some models through higher monthly payments.

Unlike rival carriers, T-Mobile charges the full retail price of phones, spread over two years, but reduces monthly service fees for voice, text and data. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and others typically charge $200 or so up front for high-end phones and make up for the rest of the phone's cost through higher service fees over the life of a two-year contract.

Under a new payment plan introduced in March, T-Mobile charges a down payment for the phone and monthly installments until the device is paid off in two years. For instance, customers pay $146 up front for an iPhone 5 and $21 a month for two years for a total cost of $650. That's about the same price Apple charges when someone buys the phone without a two-year contract for use at another carrier.

Vivendi sells Activision stake for $8.2 billion

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Vivendi SA is selling most of its majority stake in Activision Blizzard Inc. for $8.2 billion, giving the video game company back its independence as the French conglomerate tries to strengthen its balance sheet.

Vivendi said Friday that 429 million of its shares will be sold to Activision itself for $5.83 billion, or $13.60 per share. Another 172 million shares will be sold for $2.34 billion to a consortium of investors including Activision CEO Bobby Kotick and Co-chairman Brian Kelly, who are contributing $100 million each.

Santa Monica, Calif.-based Activision makes games such as "World of Warcraft" and the wildly popular "Call of Duty" series. Vivendi acquired a majority stake in Activision in 2008 and combined it with its games unit, which included "Warcraft" publisher Blizzard Entertainment, so Activision will walk away a bigger company.

Crock Pot Buffalo Wings

Juicy, spicy, and oh so tender, these crock pot buffalo wings are a real treat. Slow cooked to maintain moist and tender chicken, then crisped in the oven for a bit of crunch and to seal in all those succulent juices. Peel the skin off the wings to shave off some extra Points.

Ingredients

  • 1 8oz bottle Taba?ero All Natural Hot Sauce
  • 3 lbs chicken wings (about 30 small wings)
  • 4 tbsp light butter (I used Brummel & Brown)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water

Instructions

  1. In a small sauce pan, combine butter, Taba?ero Hot Sauce, oregano, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder and set over medium high heat. Bring to a simmer, then turn heat to low and let cook for about 5-8 more minutes.
  2. Place chicken wings in crock pot, and then pour hot sauce mixture over top of the wings.
  3. Cook on high for about 3 hours. Then, preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and mist with non-fat cooking spray.
  4. Spread wings evenly onto baking sheet and place in oven, while reserving the cooking sauce in the crock pot. Let cook until wings become browned and begin to crisp, about 25-30 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, in a very small bowl, combine cornstarch and water. Then, stir it into the sauce that?s remaining in the crock pot, until sauce begins to thicken a bit.
  6. Pour sauce over wings and serve.

USS Pueblo: North Korea expected to unveil US captured spy ship this week

USS?Pueblo, a spy ship seized off North Korea's east coast in the late 1960s, is expected to be unveiled this week as the centerpiece of a renovated war museum?to commemorate what North Korea calls 'Victory Day.'

If there was ever any doubt about what happened to the only U.S. Navy ship that is being held by a foreign government, North Korea has cleared it up. It's in Pyongyang. And it looks like it's here to stay.

With a fresh coat of paint and a new home along the Pothong River, the?USS?Pueblo, a spy ship seized off North Korea's east coast in the late 1960s, is expected to be unveiled this week as the centerpiece of a renovated war museum to commemorate what North Korea calls "Victory Day," the 60th anniversary this Saturday of the signing of the armistice that ended hostilities in the Korean War.

The ship is North Korea's greatest Cold War prize. Its government hopes the?Pueblo?will serve as a potent symbol of how the country has stood up to the great power of the United States, once in an all-out ground war and now with its push to develop the nuclear weapons and sophisticated missiles it needs to threaten the U.S. mainland.

Many of the crew who served on the vessel, then spent 11 months in captivity in North Korea, want to bring the?Pueblo?home. Throughout its history, they argue, the Navy's motto has been "don't give up the ship." ThePueblo, in fact, is still listed as a commissioned U.S. Navy vessel, the only one being held by a foreign nation.

But with relations generally fluctuating in a narrow band between bad to dangerously bad, the United States has made little effort to get it back. At times, outsiders weren't even sure where North Korea was keeping the ship or what it planned to do with it.

Requests for interviews with the captain of one of the North Korean ships involved in the attack were denied, and officials here have been tight lipped about their plans before the formal unveiling.

The?Pueblo?incident is a painful reminder of miscalculation and confusion, as well as the unresolved hostilities that continue to keep the two countries in what seems to be a permanent state of distrust and preparation for another clash, despite the truce that ended the 1950-1953 war.

Already more than 40 years old and only lightly armed so it wouldn't look conspicuous or threatening as it carried out its intelligence missions, the?USS?Pueblo?was attacked and easily captured on Jan. 23, 1968.

Surrounded by a half dozen enemy ships with MiG fighter jets providing air cover, the crew was unable to put up much of a fight. It scrambled to destroy intelligence materials, but soon discovered it wasn't well prepared for even that.

A shredder aboard the?Pueblo?quickly became jammed with the piles of papers anxious crew members shoved into it. They tried burning the documents in waste baskets, but smoke quickly filled the cabins. And there were not enough weighted bags to toss all the secret material overboard.

One U.S. sailor was killed when the ship was strafed by machine gun fire and boarded. The remaining 82, including three injured, were taken prisoner. The North Koreans sailed the?Pueblo?to the port of Wonsan.

For the survivors, that's when the real ordeal began.

"I got shot up in the original capture, so we were taken by bus and then train for an all-night journey to Pyongyang in North Korea, and then they put us in a place we called the barn," said Robert Chicca of Bonita, Calif., a Marine Corps sergeant who served as a Korean linguist on the?Pueblo. "We had fried turnips for breakfast, turnip soup for lunch, and fried turnips for dinner. ... There was never enough to eat, and personally I lost about 60 pounds over there."

Although the ship was conducting intelligence operations, crew members say that most of them had little useful information for the North Koreans. That, according to the crew, didn't stop them from being beaten severely during interrogations.

"The Koreans basically told us, they put stuff in front of us, they said you were here, you were spying, you will be shot as spies," said Earl Phares from Ontario, Calif., who was cleaning up after the noon meal in the galley when the attack began. "Everybody got the same amount of beatings in the beginning."

North Korea said the ship had entered its territorial waters, though the U.S. maintained it was in international waters 15 miles off the nearest land.

The incident quickly escalated. The U.S., already deeply embroiled in the Vietnam War, sent several aircraft carriers to the Sea of Japan and demanded the captives be released. Just days before the attack, North Korean commandos had launched an assassination attempt on South Korea's President Park Chung-hee at his residence.

North Korea responded by putting members of the crew before cameras to confess publicly. The crew members planted defiant codes into forced letters of confession and extended their middle fingers in images sent around the world. That led to further beatings when the North Koreans figured out the gesture's meaning.

On Dec. 21, 1968, Maj. Gen. Gilbert H. Woodward, the chief U.S. negotiator, signed a statement acknowledging that the?Pueblo?had "illegally intruded into the territorial waters of North Korea" and apologizing for "the grave acts committed by the U.S. ship against" North Korea. Both before and after, he read into the record a statement disavowing the confession.

The hostages were released across the Demilitarized Zone that divides the two Koreas two days before Christmas ? 335 days after their capture.

The Navy considered a court-martial for the ship's captain, Cmdr. Lloyd M. "Pete" Bucher, for letting thePueblo?fall into enemy hands without firing a shot and for failing to destroy much of the ship's classified material. But he was never brought to trial. John H. Chafee, secretary of the Navy at the time, said Bucher and the other crew members "had suffered enough."

To this day, members of the?Pueblo?crew say Bucher made the right decision, though years later his second-in-command publicly questioned Bucher's decisions not to fight.

"It would have been nice to take out some of the guys, some of them, and maybe go down fighting, but it would have been total suicide," said Phares. "We never thought anything would happen, and we weren't supposed to create an international incident."

In 2002, former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Donald P. Gregg said a North Korean foreign ministry official hinted at a deal to return the?Pueblo. But when he later visited Pyongyang, he said he was told the climate had changed and a return was no longer an option.

In January the next year, Colorado Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell reintroduced a resolution in Congress asking North Korea to return the ship. There has been no progress since, however, at least none that has been made public.

"The ship was named after?Pueblo, Colorado, and they would have loved to have the ship back," Chicca said. "It's very disappointing to have it still there, and still being used as anti-American propaganda."

The planned display of the ship by North Korea hangs over the heads of the crew members who have long campaigned for its return.

"I'll never give up, but I don't think it's ever coming back," Phares said. "It's just unfortunate that we got put in that situation, and that the top brass blamed us, or blamed Bucher, for everything."

Hitting Mike Costanzo is a tough assignment for any team.

But a club with four left-handed batters in the lineup faces an even more difficult task as Libertyville discovered Wednesday night.

The St. Rita lefty struck out 13 after spotting the Wildcats an early run as the Mustangs won 4-1 in the semifinals of the Phil Lawler Summer Classic at Benedictine University in Lisle.

St. Rita (16-5) will go for its first summer title since 2009 and third since 2005 when it plays Lyons (26-6) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Benedictine.

?I didn?t have it, obviously, early on, but just found a way to work with it,? said Costanzo, who has committed to Austin Peay. ?Had the defense behind me, trusted my ability with what I had (Wednesday night).?

?You never want to feel good going into a game but when you have him on the mound, it?s hard not to feel good,? St. Rita coach Mike Zunica said.

?We really felt the whole way, two or three runs were going to be enough with the stuff he had. ... We thought he had electric stuff from the bullpen all the way up to the first inning, even though the first inning didn?t go very well.?

Libertyville (18-5) opened the bottom of the first by putting the first two runners on base as Jimmy Govern had an infield hit and Costanzo hit Matt Reed with a pitch. Costanzo?s error moved the runners up and Mitch Townsend?s groundout scored Govern to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Then Costanzo, who walked five and allowed four hits, settled in and Libertyville didn?t get another runner past second until the seventh inning.

St. Rita, meanwhile, edged ahead with the help of some defensive lapses by Libertyville.

The Mustangs went up 2-1 with two unearned runs in the third, scoring on Tyler Halas? sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk to A.J. Fuller. The Wildcats had two errors in the inning.

Another error helped the Mustangs make it 3-1 in the fourth, when Nate Soria drove in a run with a forceout. Soria?s sacrifice fly in the sixth drove in the game?s only earned run.

Andrew Plunkett took the loss, going six innings and allowing eight hits and four runs (one earned). He walked four and struck out three.

Anthony Faron was 3-for-4 for St. Rita and Shane Peisker went 2-for-2 with a double.

At least 77 killed, 131 injured, after train derails in Spain

By Teresa Medrano and Miguel Vidal

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (Reuters) - A train derailed outside the ancient northwestern Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela on Wednesday evening, killing at least 77 people and injuring up to 131 in one of Europe's worst rail disasters.

Bodies covered in blankets lay next to the overturned carriages as smoke billowed from the wreckage. Firefighters clambered over the twisted metal trying to get survivors out of the windows, while ambulances and fire engines surrounded the scene.

The government said it was working on the assumption the derailment, which occurred on the eve of the city's main religious festival, was an accident.

Sabotage or attack was unlikely to be involved, an official source said, though the devastation will have stirred memories of a train bombing in Madrid in 2004, carried out by Islamist extremists, that killed 191 people.

The source said speeding may be the cause of the derailment.

The Santiago de Compostela train operated by state rail company Renfe with 247 people on board derailed as the city prepared for the festival of Saint James, when thousands of Christian pilgrims from across the world pack the streets.

The city's tourism board said all festivities, including the traditional High Mass at the centuries-old cathedral, were cancelled as the city went into mourning following the crash.

"It was going so quickly. ... It seems that on a curve the train started to twist, and the wagons piled up one on top of the other," passenger Ricardo Montesco told Cadena Ser radio station.

"A lot of people were squashed on the bottom. We tried to squeeze out of the bottom of the wagons to get out and we realised the train was burning. ... I was in the second wagon and there was fire. ... I saw corpses," he added.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who was born in Santiago de Compostela, will visit the site on Thursday morning, his spokeswoman said.

"In the face of a tragedy such as just happened in Santiago de Compostela on the eve of its big day, I can only express my deepest sympathy as a Spaniard and a Galician," Rajoy said in a statement.

    TRAVELLING TOO FAST?

El Pais newspaper cited sources close to the investigation as saying the train was travelling at over twice the speed limit on a sharp curve.

Both Renfe and state-owned Adif, which is in charge of the tracks, had opened an investigation into the cause of the derailment, Renfe said.

The official source said no statement would be made regarding the cause until the black boxes of the train were examined, but said it was most likely an accident.

"We are moving away from the hypothesis of sabotage or attack," he said. "It's too early to be 100 percent sure but speeding is a likely cause for the accident."

The mayor of Santiago Angel Curras told Cadena Ser radio: "It seems the speed of the train was likely not the right one."

Clinics in Santiago de Compostela were overwhelmed with people flocking to give blood, while hotels organised free rooms for relatives. Madrid sent forensic scientists and hospital staff to the region on special flights.

The death toll was 77, a spokeswoman for Galicia's Supreme Court said on Thursday morning, adding that the figures were still provisional. She said that 73 three people had died at the site of the derailment and four died in hospital.

Up to 131 people were injured, a Galicia-based spokeswoman for the office of the central government had earlier said.

"The scene is shocking, it's Dante-esque," said the head of the surrounding Galicia region, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, in a radio interview.

The eight-carriage train was travelling from Madrid to Ferrol on the Galician coast when it derailed, Renfe said in a statement.

    NO BUDGET CUTS

The disaster happened as Spain is struggling to emerge from a long-running recession marked by government-driven austerity to bring its finances into order.

Firefighters called off a strike to help with the disaster, while hospital staff, many operating on reduced salaries because of spending cuts, worked overtime to tend the injured.

Adif, the state railways infrastructure company, told Reuters no budget cuts had been implemented on the maintenance of the line, which connects La Coruna, Santiago de Compostela and Ourense and was inaugurated in 2011.

It also said more than 100 million euros a year were being spent on track maintenance in the country.

The city's main festival focuses on St James, one of Jesus' 12 disciples whose remains are said to rest there and who is patron saint of Galicia.

The apostle's shrine there is the destination of the famous El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, followed by Christians since the Middle Ages.

The derailment happened less than two weeks after six people died when a train came off the tracks and hit the platform at a station in central France.

That accident may have been caused by a loose steel plate at a junction, French train operator SNCF said.

Wednesday's derailment was one of the worst rail accidents in Europe over the past 25 years.

In November 2000, 155 people were killed when a fire in a tunnel engulfed a funicular train packed with skiers in Austria.

In Montenegro, up to 46 people were killed and nearly 200 injured in 2006 when a packed train derailed and plunged into a ravine outside the capital, Podgorica.

In Spain itself, 41 people were killed the same year when an underground train derailed and overturned in a tunnel just before entering the Jesus metro station in Valencia.

WSJ: Google Is Also Testing a Hangout-Equipped Set-Top Box

If Chromecast isn?t enough, the Wall Street Journal is now reporting that Google has also been working on another living room device: A set-top box with a heavy emphasis on communication.

According to the newspaper, ex-Android head Andy Rubin demonstrated a Roku-style set-top box to a select band at CES earlier this year. It?s main selling point was, apparently, a heavy Hangouts emphasis: It featured a video camera and motion sensor to let you video call from the comfort of the sofa. It also ran Android apps, games, and streaming services like Netflix.

The paper claims that the original plan was to launch that device at I/O ? which obviously didn?t happen. If there?s any truth in these rumours, then, that suggests that either Chromecast may have taken its place, or that we can expect a more fully-featured living room device from Google in the future. Or it?s all junk. [WSJ]

    Matthew Flinders gets London statue

The first explorer to circumnavigate Australia will be commemorated in bronze at one of London's busiest railway stations.

Matthew Flinders commanded the first ship to travel all the way around Australia between 1801 to 1803.

He is also thought to be the first man to coin the name 'Australia' in a map of the continent in 1804.

He's regarded as extra important in South Australia where the Flinders Ranges, Flinders Chase National Park, Flinders Street in Adelaide, and Flinders University are all named after him.

On Thursday, Australia's High Commissioner to the UK, Mike Rann, said a statue of Flinders would be built at Euston Station, where he's believed to be buried.

'A magnificent statue of the great British explorer, Matthew Flinders ... will be erected at Euston Station,' Mr Rann tweeted.

'Flinders was the driving force behind our continent being named Australia'.

Mr Rann called Flinders 'central to the Australian story and to our identity'.

UK sculptor Mark Richards has been commissioned to design the statue, which will depict Flinders at work over a stylised map of Australia.

A Hubble view of Comet ISON

Approaching the sun, Comet ISON floats against a seemingly infinite backdrop of numerous galaxies and a handful of foreground stars. The icy visitor, with its long gossamer tail, appears to be swimming like a tadpole through a deep pond of celestial wonders.

In reality, the comet is much, much closer. The nearest star to the sun is over 60,000 times farther away, and the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way is over thirty billion times more distant. These vast dimensions are lost in this deep space Hubble exposure that visually combines our view of the universe from the very nearby to the extraordinarily far away.

In this composite image, background stars and galaxies were separately photographed in red and yellow-green light. Because the comet moved between exposures relative to the background objects, its appearance was blurred. The blurred comet photo was replaced with a single, black-and-white exposure. The images were taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 on April 30, 2013.
