Twenty thousand pounds of relief supplies were collected by Buckeyes for delivery to hundreds of New Jersey families displaced by Hurricane Sandy.

The effort was started by two men, John Galvin and Pete Loeb after they watched an NBC special on the hurricane.

"I was moved by the devastation so I hit up my friend and I said we can do something about this," Loeb said.

Galvin started a Facebook page called "Buckeyes For Sandy Relief" and?he said the idea took off on social media websites.

"What our goal was, if we do the hard work for a few days and connect the dots, then everybody comes in and does?their bit, you add it up and you get this," (pointing at the semi trailer) Galvin said.

With a space at OSU's RPAC and a semi truck and driver donated by White Castle, by Sunday afternoon the group collected?half of a 53 foot-long trailer?of water, clothes, diapers and non-perishable food.

Ted Hattemer from the OSU Communication department helped facilitate the social media?part of the drive.

"The social media aspect is tremendous when you need to get a broad message out in a hurry," he said. "Everybody connects through either Twitter or Facebook and that is really how people find out about this."

NBC4 followed the truck to its distribution point, the Apostolic Tabernacle Church?in Pleasantville, New Jersey.

"We are really helping a lot of people in Atlantic City, Ventnor, Moorgate, Long port communities who got hit worst than Pleasantville," said Pastor Wayne Gilliss. "The issue is so many people had to relocate because they were forced out of their homes."

Peyara Begrum and his wife who live on the Atlantic City side?of Lakes Bay was one of those families. They?fled to their daughter's home in New York and watched television in dismay as their neighborhood was flooded.

"We heard the reporter say the boardwalk is gone, the boardwalk is gone and we became very sad," he said.

They lost all of their belongings on the first floor and were waiting for an estimate from the insurance company.

Across the bay in Pleasantville, another family chose to stay in their home because they feared looters.

"We stayed upstairs and saw the whole thing, it looked like a twister and the waves were coming over,?first it hit my two cars and then I saw?my neighbor's house coming this way," Diana Donlen said. "We thought the roof was coming off, it was horrible."

Pastor Gilliss said they do not need any more clothes, they need cleaning kits, non-perishable food and water. The pastor said the apostolic church has been distributing supplies for hurricane victims for more than a week. Tasha Rodriguez, her mom and sister were in line for supplies.

"My mom got her car flooded and it is not working," she said.

Wendy Cruz said her family was forced out their home after sea-water invaded the first floor of their home. "We pretty much lost everything," she said. "We are very thankful for the relief supplies," Cruz said.

"You are?seeing this incredible outpouring of the central Ohio community and Buckeyes everywhere across Ohio who came to help," said Galvin.
