Jony Ive

In September 1997, a 30-year-old designer at Apple was on the cusp of quitting.

Fifteen years later, after a shake up of the company's executives yesterday, he's Apple's most important employee.

In 1997, Apple had lost its way. The top executives were focused on maximizing the company's profits, instead of building great products.

The focus on profits made sense at the time, because Apple was down to its last dollars. It was on the cusp of dying.

But there was a reason for hope. Apple bought NeXT Software for $400 million, bringing estranged co-founder Steve Jobs back to the company.

Jobs, while not yet CEO of Apple, immediately began changing the culture of the company. He gave a speech to employees saying Apple's focus was on making great products, not making money.

As soon as the 30-year-old designer heard Jobs speak, he changed his mind about leaving the company, according to Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs.

The designer's name is Jonathan Ive, though everyone calls him Jony.

His decision to stay at Apple ended up being one of the reasons Apple staged the most impressive comeback in corporate history, going from near-death to the world's most valuable company.

Ive rose through the ranks to become the company's lead hardware designer.

Yesterday, he was given more responsibilities. CEO Tim Cook promoted him to lead the company's software design, or as Apple calls it, Human Interface. This means he's the lead designer for both hardware and software at the most influential technology company in the world.

While Cook is Apple's most powerful employee, Ive is now its most important. He will be guiding all major product decisions.

When Steve Jobs died, everyone wanted to know who was going to fill the gaping void he left behind. For the last twelve months, the answer was, "A committee of executives." That committee has been considerably shrunk down, and today it's not unreasonable to answer the question by saying, "Jony Ive."

There is arguably no better executive to fill the role. Jobs told his biographer Walter Isaacson, "If I had a spiritual partner at Apple, it?s Jony."

Jobs and Ive were so close employees referred to the duo as Jives, a portmanteau of their names. The duo were often spotted walking around Apple's campus, or talking in Apple's dining room.

"Jony had a special status," Jobs' wife Laurene Powell told Isaacson. "He would come by our house, and our families became close. Steve is never intentionally wounding to him. Most people in Steve?s life are replaceable. But not Jony."

The relationship started when Jobs returned to Apple. He was touring the company's design labs and found Ive's work.

At the time, Jobs was looking for a designer from outside of Apple to lead the company's rejuvenation. But eventually, he saw Ive's work, struck up a relationship with Ive, and together they went on to produce the most iconic computer designs in history.

Ive, who was disillusioned with Apple at the time says, "We discussed approaches to forms and materials," adding, "We were on the same wavelength. I suddenly understood why I loved the company."

Their first major product was the all-in-one colorful iMac. While most people focus on the the curvy translucent colorful computer design in an era of boring beige boxes, Ive added a very subtle touch to the computer that reveals much about his personality and design philosophy.?

The iMac had a handle built into the top of the computer. Ive explained the decision, saying, "Back then, people weren't comfortable with technology. If you're scared of something, then you won't touch it." He continued, "I thought, if there's this handle on it, it makes a relationship possible. It's approachable. It's intuitive. It gives a sense of its deference to you."

Perhaps one reason Ive emphasized the importance of making a computer that was easy to approach is that for years he didn't think he was a technically adept person because he was confused by computers.

In an interview, Ive said, "I went through college having a real problem with computers. I was convinced that I was technically inept, which was frustrating as I wanted to use computers to help me with various aspects of my design."

Then, as he was at the end of his time in school, he discovered the Mac. "I remember being astounded at just how much better it was than anything else I had tried to use. I was struck by the care taken with the whole user experience. I had a sense of connection via the object with the designers."

At the old Apple, Ive's handle would have never been approved because it was a superfluous feature that only added cost. At the new Apple with Steve Jobs in charge, the handle stuck.

After the iMac came out, Ive's relationship with Jobs grew stronger, and thus his role at the company became larger and larger.

Before dying Jobs said of Ive: "The difference that Jony has made, not only at Apple, but in the world, is huge. He is a wickedly intelligent person in all ways. He understands business concepts, marketing concepts. He picks stuff up just like that, click. He understands what we do at our core better than anyone."

And perhaps in a bit of foreshadowing of power struggles to come after his death, Jobs said, "He has more operational power than anyone else at Apple except me. There?s no one who can tell him what to do, or to butt out. That?s the way I set it up."

This explains why Ive won what appears to be a fight for control over the direction of Apple with Scott Forstall, the former leader of iOS.

Justin Sullivan?Getty Images

Apple CEO Tim Cook, with Ive, and Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl after Apple's iPhone 5 event.

He reportedly couldn't stand to be in the same room as Forstall. He was also said to deplore the direction Apple's design was heading. Under Forstall, Apple was implementing more and more skeuomorphic design, which is a fancy way of saying making digital animations that mimic real life devices. For instance, in Passbook, if you delete a pass, a fake paper shredder cuts the paper. It's a neat animation, and it's supposed to make people feel comfortable with technology ? see it's just like real life! But this design takes a lot of time and looks increasingly goofy.

Now that Ive is in charge, expect skeuomorphism at Apple to fade away.

(It's worth noting that Steve Jobs was a big fan of this design style. Perhaps Forstall was overdoing it, though.)

Another reason Forstall is out at Apple is that he wore "his ambition in plainer view than the typical Apple executive. He blatantly accumulated influence in recent years, including, it is whispered, when Jobs was on medical leave," according to Adam Lashinsky.

Forstall wanted to be CEO. He was amassing power, and challenging Tim Cook.

While Ive understands "business concepts," he doesn't want to be CEO, according to various reports. He wants to be the product guy.

Well, he is the product guy now. Once, only in charge of hardware, he's now responsible for software, too. Only one person at Apple has ever held those same responsibilities: Steve Jobs.

Another new member =u=

Hello fellow RPers, I am Abeo =u= I just joined in today in hopes of finding some awesome threads to join in and roleplay some awesome stories with others.

I've been a RPer for a while, probably about 5 years, but I wouldn't call myself a 'pro' or anything. It's been pretty hard these days to find a RP with the site I normally go to and I've been looking up on google on other sites to join in. I found this website through an 'ask' page and people definitely recommended here and another site called Valucre, but that one seems to be down, so here I am. I'll admit that there has been other sites that I've joined in the past month in hopes of starting something there, but in the end I kept losing interest due to some of the topics the site offered or just losing interest very fast. However, I looked into RPG a lot more and I really like a lot of the unique features it has for those joining or creating a RP. I really do hope that I will become an active user on this website since I've been wanting to RP for a very long time.

I don't have a favorite genre, but I would love to join in on anything that catches my interest. I have a big habit on creating new random characters that I always want to use for any RPs, but if I don't find one in time to use this character, he/she sadly poofs from my head. I'm currently starting to make a list of any characters I think of so that I can keep a track on what I'm trying to think of. In the near future, I hope that I can get a good profile on each of them, commission someone to make an official character sheet out of them, and use them in any RPs so that at least I can feel like I have 'immortalized' them for myself.

Aside from group RPs, I would say I am more active on 1v1 RPs. Hopefully if I do become an active user, if anyone is interested I have a Skype account that we can use to RP as well (1v1 or Group RPs).

What I would love to do is first find and RP that tickles my fancy and roleplay there before I try to make my own thread. I have one idea that has been nagging me to try to work something out, and I would love to see if anyone else would be interested in RPing this idea with me.

I hope I will become an active member on this great website, and become friends with a lot of people here =u=

Soda consumption, TV and video/computer games, and the frequency of meals heavily influenced students' weight in an Indiana University study that examined the impact of a school-based obesity intervention program over an 18-month period.

More soda consumption and screen time meant students were more likely to be overweight or to gain weight. The more frequently students ate meals each day, the less likely they were to stay overweight or gain weight during the study, which examined the Healthy, Energetic, Ready, Outstanding, Enthusiastic Schools program.

Dong-Chul Seo, associate professor in the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington, said participation in team sports also contributed to students' ability to achieve a healthy weight.

"Schools and families may be able to successfully focus on these modifiable risk factors, decreasing the burden of childhood obesity," he said.

HEROES, implemented by schools in southern Indiana, northwestern Kentucky and southeastern Illinois, is sponsored by the Welborn Baptist Foundation and based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Coordinated School Health Model. HEROES is intended to enhance schoolwide wellness culture through changes in physical education, nutrition, the physical environment, health promotion efforts for school staff and family, and community involvement. Researchers from IU's School of Public Health-Bloomington and the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community have been evaluating the HEROES initiative for the past four years.

"Predictors for Persistent Overweight, Deteriorated Weight and Improved Weight Status During 18 Months in a School-Based Longitudinal Cohort" involved 5,309 students at 11 schools.

Seo said the findings confirm the connection between higher levels of soda consumption and persistent overweight and deteriorating weight status, and they support the recent and controversial New York City ban on sales of supersized soda and other sweetened beverages.

The finding about the relationship between the number of meals students eat daily and their weight contributes to a scant amount of evidence in this area.

"Thus, encouraging students to maintain a regular meal pattern with at least three meals a day appears to be a good strategy to help students achieve healthy weight," Seo said.

The research found that the overall socio-economic status of a school had an impact on students. Those attending schools with lower socio-economic status were more likely to be overweight or to gain weight during the study period. This could reflect the greater opportunities students have for nutritious food offerings and physical activity at schools with high socio-economic status, Seo said, or it could reflect peer influence.

Seo will discuss this study with Mindy King at 6:15 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Oct. 30. Co-authors are King and Danielle Neukam, with the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at IU; Nayoung Kim, IU School of Public Health-Bloomington; and Rhonda Meade, Welborn Baptist Foundation.

MasterCard Set To Select Ketchum As New PR Shop - Advertising Age

MasterCard is set to consolidate all U.S. PR and corporate communications work within Omnicom's Ketchum following a competitive review, Ad Age has learned.

IPG incumbent Weber Shandwick competed with Ketchum in the final round. Initially, the brief went out to independents Ruder Finn, Edelman, Taylor Strategy and APCO, as well as Next Fifteen's Bite and WPP's Public Strategies and Cohn & Wolfe. After the initial briefing, at least a few of these agencies decided not to participate, according to people familiar with the matter.

Cohn & Wolfe has supported various digital and social efforts for the company, APCO has provided reputation and issues-management services and Taylor has worked on various consumer efforts. The move is a blow to incumbent Weber Shandwick. The agency has worked with MasterCard for at least a few years and continues to work with the company in various global markets, including Asia and Europe.

Andrew Bowins, senior VP and group head of external and worldwide communications at MasterCard, told Ad Age that Ketchum will support U.S. and corporate PR business. "This is part of a continued evolution of communications at MasterCard to advance the business through consumer and customer-engagement models that allow MasterCard to integrate digital, social, online and traditional communication vehicles in a manner that engages people, merchants and governments in a more meaningful way," he said.

"As we move into 2013 beyond," Mr. Bowins said, "we will continue to energize our corporate and U.S. PR programs and leverage all channels to meet our goals while creating direct and high-impact engagements that help the MasterCard value story come to life and be top of mind."

He added that the company is focused on "...the public dialogue around the benefits of a world that is moving beyond cash and the merits of digital payment and card-based systems. It's a dialogue that moves beyond traditional B2B conversations and places business and consumers at the center of the discussions."

Mr. Bowins explained that while Ketchum's remit does not dictate local and regional strategy needs outside the U.S., the firm will "help build program frameworks, shape strategy and develop content and engagement models across channels."

He didn't indicate specifically how the change will affect the incumbents but said, "Our incumbent agencies, Weber, APCO and Taylor, have been exceptional partners that have helped build our foundation today."

"Reputation and issues management is part of the U.S. and corporate remit, as is consumer," he added, implying that those PR duties, typically handled by the other firms, will be consolidated within Ketchum. "Ketchum will serve as AOR on these fronts."

The move breaks the company's tight circle of IPG shops, created when the company in 2010 ended its decade-plus relationship with Omnicom Group's GSD&M to consolidate U.S. media-planning and -buying business with Interpublic Group of Cos.' Universal McCann. The selection had united MasterCard's creative, media, PR and digital accounts under the IPG umbrella, with McCann Erickson Worldwide handling creative, R/GA managing digital, Weber Shandwick running PR duties and Octagon handling sports marketing and partnerships.

In addition to Mr. Bowins, the competitive review also likely involved Seth Eisen, senior business leader of communication in the U.S. markets. According to his LinkedIn profile, Mr. Eisen has worked at a variety of major PR firms, including Ketchum early in his career, as well as WPP's Cohn & Wolfe, Publicis Groupe's MSLGroup and independent Waggener Edstrom. Mr. Bowins emphasized the review process was "comprehensive."

For Ketchum, it's also a return to the financial services big leagues, as the agency had worked with Visa for a number of years in the past. It's an accomplishment at a time when there aren't many accounts with seven-figure PR budgets up for bid.

MasterCard spent $119 million on U.S. advertising in 2011, a 4.1% decrease from 2010, according to Kantar Media.

South Dakota executes man who raped, murdered nine-year-old girl

(Note: strong language in seventh paragraph)

(Reuters) - A man convicted of the 1990 rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl was put to death on Tuesday night in a South Dakota execution witnessed by the victim's parents, who drove 1,400 miles from their New York home to watch him die.

Donald Moeller, 60, had professed his innocence for more than two decades before finally admitting in early October that he had raped and fatally stabbed Becky O'Connell after abducting her from a Sioux Falls convenience store where she had gone to buy candy.

Moeller was pronounced dead by lethal injection at 10:24 p.m. local time at the state prison in Sioux Falls, according to the state corrections department. He was the second convicted killer put to death in South Dakota this month, but only the fourth since 1913.

O'Connell's mother, Tina Curl, and her stepfather, Dave Curl, drove from their home in Lake Luzerne, New York, to witness Moeller's execution.

Photographs of Becky at age 9 and a portrait of what she might have looked like at age 32 were displayed by the Curls at a news conference following the execution and posted by the Argus Leader newspaper on its website.

"He will no longer take another breath or hurt another child," Dave Curl said of Moeller, adding that the execution would never give them closure, though there was some feeling of relief.

"Everyone keeps telling us to make this about Becky. There is no Becky because of Donald Moeller," Curl said. "Whether right or wrong, we will hate that son-of-a-bitch until the day we die. May he rot in hell."

According to court records, he had repeatedly raped and stabbed the girl. Her body was found in a wooded area with extensive knife wounds the morning after she vanished.

Moeller was convicted of rape and murder and sentenced to death in 1992, but was granted a new trial after the state Supreme Court ruled that testimony of previous attempted sexual assaults on three other people was inadmissible.

He was convicted and sentenced again in 1997 but continued appeals until recent weeks, when he halted further efforts to seek a reprieve and admitted to the crimes in a hearing in early October.

"If the rape and murder of Rebecca O'Connell does not deserve the death penalty, then I guess nothing does," he told the judge.

Moeller ate a last meal of scrambled eggs, sausage links, tater tots and drip coffee, the corrections department said.

When asked whether he had any last words before his execution, Moeller replied, "No, sir," then asked, "They're my fan club?" in apparent reference to the witnesses for the execution.

Executions have been rare in South Dakota. Before this year, the state had put to death only two inmates since 1913. On October 15, it executed Eric Robert for the killing of prison guard Ron Johnson during a failed escape attempt.

Moeller was the 34th inmate executed in the United States in 2012, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
