Ford Focus 1.6 petrol: Engine gives out a ticking/hissing type sound

o Engine Size: 1.6 petrol
o Year: 2001

The engine on my Focus gives out an audible undulating ticking/hissing noise when idling or running. It appears to get faster as the revs increase. I don?t normally run at more than 2500 revs. Any suggestions on this? Thanks.
